Louise Winter is writing a book with end-of-life doula Anna Lyons, exploring a more empowered approach to death and dying. It will be published by Green Tree (a Bloomsbury imprint) in Spring 2020.
We’re all going to die, so why are we so bad at talking about it? If we acknowledge and accept our mortality, can we live a better life? If we embrace the end of life in the same way as we embrace the beginning, can we transform our lives? Louise’s talk will be as much about life and living, as death and dying. It’s a reflection on the beauties, blessings and tragedies of life, the exquisite agony and ecstasy of being alive, and the fragility of everything we hold dear.

Louise is a progressive funeral director and the founder of Poetic Endings, a modern funeral service in London. Poetic Endings is LGBTQIA friendly, recommended by the Good Funeral Guide, a member of the Association of Green Funeral Directors and recommended by the Natural Death Centre. She’s also the co-director of Life. Death. Whatever. It began life as a ground-breaking festival, which ran in partnership with the National Trust; it developed into an international community of eclectic people from many different disciplines (artists, writers, funeral professionals, hospice and hospital workers, counsellors, medical staff and interested members of the public) who are united in a commitment to doing death differently; it’s also an approach that influences our individual work – a forward-thinking, educational, honest, approachable, transparent, bold and brave way of addressing the inevitable.an award festival and community that exists to change the dialogue around death and dying.
Louise believes that acknowledging and accepting that one day we will die is the key to living a full life. She believes that death and dying doesn’t have to be a gloomy or taboo subject, but that society needs to find a way to deal with the uncomfortable emotions surrounding it.
In 2017, Louise won a Death Oscar at the Good Funeral Awards for her work with Life. Death. Whatever. She was Editor of the Good Funeral Guide from 2016-17. She regularly writes about her work and has been featured in publications around the world, including Vice, Stylist, Daily Telegraph and the Guardian.
