Jobhack with Penguin Random House

18/11/2016 @ 10:00 - 16:00

Do you like to think, make and do?

What was the last story that really caught your attention? A news story on Facebook, the latest series on Netflix, or a podcast that’s taken iTunes by storm? That’s what book publishing’s about. We tell stories on the page and beyond.

Working in publishing, you’re the one who gets there first – before a story is a series on HBO, before it’s a film, sometimes even before it has a title.

If you’re curious to see where that could lead, our story together could start right here…

WHAT DOES THE DAY INVOLVE?
JobHack is a workshop day on Friday 18th November in Liverpool. Through activities and talks, you’ll learn about how to get into publishing, the different roles in the industry and what they really mean, and find out how to stand out and get hired.

We’ll put you in the shoes of an editor, a recruiter, a marketer and many other roles in between, so you can get to grips with what it’s like to work in those functions. Plus, you’ll even get a chance to network with the team (we’re nice, promise!), get CV tips and advice, and go behind the scenes of the world’s first global publisher.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
We really want to meet you! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never thought about publishing as a career before and you don’t even need to have a degree to get involved. All we want to know in your cover letter is:

A little bit about yourself. Who you are, what makes you tick?
What you would like to get out of the day?
Tell us about a story you love – this could be a book, TV series, film or via another media
Make sure to answer the above questions in a Word document and submit in place of your cover letter. We’ll get back to you by the 11th November to confirm your attendance.

HOW TO APPLY
Please submit your 100 word standout, CV and cover letter making sure you answer the questions above.

Still not sure? Head over to Storify to find out what happened at JobHack Birmingham, or read our feature on 6 reasons why you should sign up to attend!

This is what previous attendees had to say:

“Absolutely loved it. Lovely staff, hugely influential.”

“I absolutely loved how interactive the tasks were so we could learn so much more about the industry”

“Lit my passion to get a career in publishing!”

“I came in not knowing much of the big picture and this has really explained what publishing is about. I have come away excited about roles I didn’t even know existed.”

“I really enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere and the fact that we could ask the staff about their individual roles. It was thoroughly enjoyable to work in teams and face challenges that are still relevant now.”

“Fantastic day, 10/10 would recommend.”
