Thinking about being a freelance proofreader?
Proofreading is more than just checking grammar, you need to understand other things, including the process involved in producing a book.
The chances of getting work are variable, but not good. You will be competing with the established workforce, many of whom trained within a publishing company and have many years’ experience.
The SFEP receives up to 10,000 enquiries a year from newcomers wishing to go freelance.
Formal training is necessary. The SFEP runs courses, but experience is the key. You can find yourself in a catch-22 situation. Freelance rates are not good and the work is unlikely to come in a steady flow.
